A bit more about me so that you may see a bit more of yourself in my words…..

What DO you actually do?

I guess some people would call me a ‘healer’. What does that mean? I’ve always been extra sensitive and have found writing, yoga, mediumship and Reiki to be ways in which I can be who I REALLY am in the world and help people in the process. I’ve always aimed to be about helping others.

I also work for one of the most inspiring women in the world during the day doing- you guessed it- helping people through writing. When you know you know, what can I say. Words are my best friends.

Is that an accent I hear? Where are you from?

You mean, my flat-A’s and how I talk out of the side of my mouth? Yes. I have an accent. I was born and raised in Buffalo, New York. Except for a 2 year stint- and AMAZINGLY FUN TIME- in Washington, DC, I lived in Buffalo, NY my entire life until my family and I moved to Tampa, Florida in 2013. That move broke me open and was the greatest (and hardest) thing I’ve ever done in my life.

Why should I believe you?

In the past 2 years I lost my Dad and my Father-in-Law within 3 weeks of each other and since then I have not only walked through my own grief but that of my husband, son, and family. I came close to losing my marriage, was ousted by family, I ended up in the hospital with an abnormal EKG, stress test, and a procedure to examine my heart, and spent countless hours in therapy, binge watching TV, drinking wine and eating cheese, working with coaches, on the yoga mat, and with my own heart.

I’ve endured it and navigated it all. Just like you.

Do you have to be flexible to do yoga?

I’m a plus-sized, 42 year old, Mom of one who has fallen in love with the practice of yoga. If you’re a living, breathing person you can do yoga. It has allowed me to fall in love with my body (even though the world tries to get me to hate it) and teach others to remember their breath and come back into their bodies. I teach yoga in Tampa and am happy to help you figure out where to start if you’re curious about yoga- wherever you live.

What is Reiki? And how can you actually do it?

Reiki is an energy healing that is passed through a person who has been trained in it to the person receiving it. It is a healing technique that is passed through the hands of a practitioner to the person receiving it but can also be transmitted across miles, pictures and through visual contact via a computer, phone, or even a thought.

If you don’t trust me, ask Johns Hopkins.

Can you really talk to people who’ve passed away?

In short, yes. We all can if you pay attention and know how to listen. Our passed on loved ones are all around us, letting us know that they’re there and that we are loved. Yes, I’m a psychic medium. I work with people to connect with their loved ones who have passed away, I give evidence that they are there and I share messages of healing, love, and connection. It’s one of the most special gifts I can give to others.

What’s your favorite quote?

I’ll share one of mine and one from someone else.

Here’s mine- “Your shoulds are shit.” Every time you think you ‘should’ do something stop and think do you REALLY want to do it? Most often the answer is no. See, they’re shit. (And yes, I swear. That’s your heads up.)

As for someone else’s this one from Martha Graham is my all-time favorite- “There is a vitality, a life force, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and there is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique, and if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium; and be lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is, not how it compares with other expression. It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open. You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work. You have to keep open and aware directly to the urges that motivate you. Keep the channel open.”

How’d you get to this path?

When I was little my dream job was to be a cashier at K-Mart. Not kidding, ask my brother. I’ve been a dance teacher, babysitter, cashier at a grocery store, shoe salesperson, ice cream worker, waitress, and executive assistant through the years. For over 15 years I was a professional fundraiser and non-profit Executive Director before we moved to Florida.

From all of this what I know for sure is that you can re-invent yourself whenever you want to. There’s always more where that came from. Follow your intuition and your curiosity.

Are you all ‘woo-woo’?

In short, kind of. I will sage my house, have crystals under my pillow, meditate by candlelight, know when the full moon is and have a dream board with my intentions for the future. These things are part of me, not all of me. I still enjoy cranking hip hop tunes in my convertible, a crisp glass of white wine, swear like a sailor, and think that burgers can be a spiritual experience. Just like everyone else- I’m a little bit of this and a little bit of that. Thank goodness because aren’t we all?

Who’s your favorite Disney character?

If you follow me on Instagram you know that our family goes to Disney….a lot. Growing up I LOVED Ariel for her determination to chase her dreams. Now, I love Moana’s Gamma Tala for being the wise-woman who dances to her own beat, supports her family after she passes on and gets that tattoo she wants (I have 3…and counting).

Who ARE you, Heather? Why should I believe you?

(Here’s my ‘official’ bio written in third-person so when someone needs to grab it and quote me, here it is.) And my last name is pronounced Fa-lip-o-wits. Please at least try. It’s not a joke it’s my name.

Heather Filipowicz is a writer and healer who believes that all people can be healed when they feel less alone in the world and remember who they truly are, not who the world has told them to be.

Born and raised in Buffalo, NY, she graduated from Canisius College in 1999 focusing on psychology and political science. She worked in politics in Washington, DC for two years until she moved back to Buffalo where she became a non-profit executive.

Over the span of 15 years she raised millions of dollars for Planned Parenthood, the American Red Cross, and was the Executive Director of the WNY Women’s Foundation. Heather is a life-long feminist and proudly raised money for missions that ensured rights for women in Western New York and the country.

She was awarded the National Fundraiser of the Year by Planned Parenthood’s National Organization and was a Forty Under 40 award recipient in Buffalo, NY.

In 2013 Heather and her family moved to Tampa, Florida where she launched her own business. She wrote and consulted with small businesses for several years until she proudly joined the Marie Forleo International team where she still works today.

In 2016 she graduated from The Lotus Pond Center for Yoga and Health with her 200 hour yoga teacher certification and is where she’s pursuing her 500 hour certification currently (anticipated graduation, Fall 2020). She teaches a weekly class and leads workshops.

In the Fall of 2017 Heather completed the Reiki Level I & II certification from the Usui lineage with Melissa Carroll and is able to perform Reiki healings on herself and others.

In the Spring of 2019 Heather completed the first level course of Mediumship with  International Psychic Medium Lindsay Marino and began giving psychic mediumship readings for others.

Heather lives in Tampa, Florida. She’s the proud wife of Joe, Mom to Logan, adopted Mom to Brinley the rescue pup, and spends much of her time at Disney World,  the beach of Pass-A-Grille, and playing carpool mom in her VW Bug convertible blasting podcasts or inappropriate hip-hop songs in the school pick up line.
